The opposition Unified Democratic Panel (MUD) termed "fraudulent" the
way the enabling law requested by President Nicolás Maduro would be
passed on Tuesday in the National Assembly.

In a statement, the MUD asserted that by passing an enabling law, the
government tries to put the blame on third parties for the country's
social and economic problems.

The democratic alternative remarked that none of the economic and social
problems of the country could be solved by granting special powers to
the president of the Republic.

"Apart from an enabling law, the economic measures the government has
implemented fail to tackle the causes of the crisis, which have to do
with the failure of the economic model in force, with a trend to
nationalize the economy, leading to corruption and inefficiency. This
failure is especially mirrored by the government's deep fiscal crisis,
which according to conservative estimates, reaches a deficit of 14% of
GDP in 2013," the MUD asserted in the statement.

They added that the government has got all the resources and
institutions available to deal with insecurity, corruption, shortage, or
inflation, some of them used as grounds to request the enabling law.

"The intensification of the crisis demands a clear orientation and
comprehensive measures to tackle the causes of the crisis the country
goes through today. The Democratic Unified Panel, based on its country
platform, believes that the answer to the economic crisis is an
agreement based on clear grounds to overcome the economic difficulties
and leading the country towards growth, progress, and social inclusion,"
the statement highlighted.
